‘Bring a Plate’ Idea Everyone Will Love

Been asked to take a plate to share to a friend’s gathering and don’t know what to take? Try these amazing sausage rolls that will guarantee an empty plate by the end of the night!

We have both chicken and beef lovers sorted – with simple yet delicious recipes for both varieties. Rather than having to umm and ahh and pore your way through cookbook after cookbook, give these sausage rolls a go – you won’t be disappointed!

Shopping List

Beef

  • 1 kg quality beef sausage mince (from a butcher)
  • 1 x brown onion, finely diced
  • 1 x carrot, finely grated
  • ½ bunch parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 x heaped tsp cracked black pepper
  • 5-6 sheets store bought frozen puff pastry (amount needed will vary depending on size of sausage rolls)
  • Egg wash (1 part egg, 2 parts milk) – enough to coat top of each sausage roll

Chicken

  • 1kg quality chicken sausage mince (from a butcher)
  • 1 x brown onion, finely diced
  • ½ bunch thyme
  • 1 tbs chilli flakes
  • 4-5 sheets puff pastry (chicken mixture yields slightly less than the beef due to fewer ingredients)
  • Egg wash (1 part egg, 2 parts milk) – enough to coat top of each sausage roll

Method – follow the same method for either variety

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (fan-forced)
  2. Separate and defrost pastry sheets
  3. Simply mix all ingredients, except the egg wash, in a bowl. Ensure well combined.
  4. Cut each pastry sheet in half
  5. Place equal parts of the mixture down the centre of each piece of pastry
  6. Roll to enclose pastry, ensuring seam is underneath
  7. Brush with egg wash and cut into 4 equal pieces (or any size you desire)
  8. Place on a tray lined with baking paper
  9. Bake for 20-25mins or until golden and cooked through
  10. Serve cold or reheat in oven before serving – whichever takes your fancy (we prefer warmed)

Makes approximately 35 pieces – beef mixture makes more than the chicken.
